coconutBattery tells you your mac's manufacture date as well.

But I think there are 2 problems (sticky and clicky), your keys are kinda sticky/gummy when they get warm/hot and my problem was the keys have a annoying click themselves, even when they're cold.

So the theory that early units have this problem and later may not, doesn't necessarily jive with what i've experienced.

If you were purchasing stock 15" machines from a local Apple Store, then couldn't they have been from a batch produced weeks before purchasing? If you still have a record of the serial numbers, you could could check when they were actually manufactured.

Yeah, you really should treasure that 13", haha.

No. Apple hasn't made a statement regarding how to use their keyboard.

Gotcha. Do you happen to have the serial numbers somewhere? If you can check the manufacturing date and it is indeed late December, then that'd definitely indicate they may not have fixed the issue :(

I've just swapped my second machine with an inconsistent keyboard. Will try it later and report back.

Have an appointment at Apple on Monday. Sad we pay premium for these and yet things like this happen.

Yeah, it's not working for me either. Perhaps these machines are too new or they changed their serial number scheme? I was able to get a small amount of information using this site: http://www.chipmunk.nl/cgi-fast/applemodel.cgi, but only when I entered in my 2012 MBP's serial number could I get back the production week.

I'm pretty sure you are/used to be able to determine the build date just by looking at the serial number, but I can't find any resources online about it. Anybody have ideas?

The manufacturing date on the new machine is 24 December 2016. All the keys are fine after running your script for about 10 minutes or so apart from the delete key that clicks as loudly as my 'E' key did. I'm starting to think that this is a problem with most of the machines. I don't believe in bad luck and all three machines have had keyboard problems.

The one difference with this key is that it happens intermittently, so I'm not sure whether it's something that I can live with or whether they can replace or repair that one key. I'm curious to hear how ou213803's trip to the Apple Store goes.

I feel exhausted with it all now.

Did you bother with a replacement?

In a sense - I downgraded from the high end 15" to the nTB 13". I'm using the savings to build a gaming PC. I really only need a laptop for DJing and working in MS Office apps and the 15" is both overkill for that and underwhelming for gaming. (I know, I know - no one uses a MBP for gaming - but I wanted to give it a shot. CLICK CLICK CLICK goes the keyboard...)

OMG. I'm so happy I found this thread. I've been thinking I was completely crazy. I am now on my 3rd 2016 MacBook Pro, and am having the clicking key issue with my "A" key now. My first machine had all sorts of issues - from graphics cards to trackpad. The second had about 30% of the keys clicking constantly. Terrible.

I've been in constant contact with Apple business and the genius bar, and this is something they aren't (at least yet) able to fix in-store.

Like others have said, I notice the keys start making the harsh clicking sound as the machine gets hotter and is working more.

What did they tell you at the Apple Store? Is the problem not repairable even changing the whole keyboard? I would not make an unnecessary trip, the Store is very far from home.

It's been quite a journey. I live about one hour away from the Apple Store, and I've been there half a dozen times over the last several weeks. The genius bar staff suggested, on my first and second ones, to just return the machine and place new orders. One of them specifically stated that they didn't even have the tools available to open up or fix the new machines.

What a shame. If this is the situation in the US, is better not hope for here in Italy. I am speechless, Tuesday I will let you know.

I know. It's a total shame. It's made me sick. Apple usually never have these type of issues. I'll be interested to hear what you find out! Good Luck!

Hi,

Same problem here with a 13'' 2016 MacBook Pro With TouchBar. The "A" key is making a clicky noise only when the Macbook gets warn.


I had a rendez-vous with genius last week, but we could not hear the clicky noise because the Macbook was cold... the genius told me that he can't just remove the key and verify, he have to replace all the keyboard.

Very disappointed for a new very expensive laptop !
